The book “An Army of Davids” explores the paradigm shift in power between large corporate entities and the individual as a result of advancements in digital technologies. By contrast, “Free Culture” explores how large corporate entities are fighting to retain control over both content and the distribution of content and, in the process, effectively restricting the rights of individuals to freely create, innovate and distribute a broad range of content, from art to the very technologies that enable creativity and innovation.

Specifically, Chapter 12: Harms, examines how the big content industries are fighting a “war of prohibition” against individuals and new competitors in the market. The industry’s claim of protecting “property” and fighting “piracy” has been advanced by their lobbyists to get the government to enact extremely punitive laws that completely outweigh the threat posed to the industry by artists and entrepreneurs. Rapidly developing digital technologies enable almost anyone to capture and share content on a variety of devices, like computers, cell phones and iPods. This has resulted in individuals being able to get and distribute all kinds of content across the Internet, with profound effect upon cultures, society and even commerce.

Constraining individual creativity and innovation by legally restricting the capture and sharing of content has dangerous consequences for our “free culture”. These consequences also affect commerce and markets as the threat of lawsuits scares investors and innovators from discovering new kinds of products and prevents artists from creating new forms of art and entertainment. Additionally, uncertainty in the law inhibits innovation and can change our culture of freedom into a culture of permission.

Copyright is property but it is also regulation. Therefore, it can be used by the older and larger industries to make it difficult for the newer smaller industries to survive in the market. The case of broadcast radio and Internet radio is an example. Internet radio has to pay royalty costs that regular radio does not and also has to collect all kinds of user data from every listener transaction. Such extreme burdens make it nearly impossible for Internet radio to operate, despite its enormous technological advantages over regular radio.

This kind of overregulation inhibits creativity and innovation and it also corrupts people and undermines respect for the law. It will be interesting to see if the laws will change to preserve a “free culture” or if they will become even more restrictive and punitive in the future, concentrating power and control back in the large corporate entities. This will be fascinating to watch.

In “An Army of Davids” the author, Glenn Reynolds, looks at how new technologies are challenging the status quo of large corporations and big governments around this world, and how ordinary people are becoming more powerful in all kind of human endeavors. Digital technologies and the Internet allow individuals everywhere to use the tools of creativity and production in their own ways, and they also allow them to distribute and access all kinds of information. The old world order was essentially a top-down culture, but the future will be more of a bottom-up society, as people no longer need to depend on large organizations for their livelihoods and organizational structures.

One of the things I think was interesting was how much individuals are becoming the chief force for changes in so many different fields, like music, art, journalism, movies, business and even science and technology. Small businesses that can even be home-based businesses will dominate the economic landscape in the future. In music and entertainment, people are already producing their own recordings and selling them without having to have exclusive recording contracts and distribution networks to sell their CDs and DVDs. In contrast to the large media outlets, individual bloggers are capturing new audiences that are interested in non-corporate sponsored points of view and also they can participate in discussions and exchange their own ideas freely on the different blogs. In my thought, during current years, that is not hard to find out blogging is getting more important for many business. There is an example of mine in 2008. In July in 2008, I decided to do that vision of eyes laser operation, and I did. That was really successful. Before I went to see that doctor that I chose, I did research. I studied about eyes laser operation, and found out which one of eye doctors has more positive recommendations from his or her patients. Even I also could see how the doctor communicated with patients on the blog. So, in my opinion, building a good blog can help your business become more successful and it is coming easier and easier since everyone gets an e-service cell phone everywhere. Google and researching on the internet became more common for people shopping, trading and making money on the internet.

Another thing that is interesting is how these new technologies are breaking down barriers between people of different countries and different cultures around this world. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter allow people from all kinds of places to exchange ideas about their different governments, and their unique ways of living, and all kinds of other things that make up their own cultures. In history, nation states created national identities and ideologies to control their own people, and often this made for misunderstandings between the people in those countries that resulted in wars. But now, the people no longer rely on their governments to tell them about the people in other countries. Instead, they are able to communicate with each other directly and discover common interests and ideas about how to live their lives, and exchange goods and service with each other. This is very beneficial to this whole world. Like recently, the people in Iran were able to communicate with the rest of the world and show what their government was doing to them even though the Iran government tried to restrict the news companies from doing that. There is a company that I know that it is doing better than their retail store is Apple. Apple online shop is available in more than 50 countries, but it opens retail store in less 35 countries. Of course, it is good for Apple because it would be able to reduce fix and variable cost.

However, another interesting point that the author makes clear is that there will still be a need for large organizations in our society. Big companies that have enormous buying power, like Wal-Mart, will fill a vital need by providing the necessary goods at reduced prices to consumers. But many consumers will be able to have their own business because of their access to cheaper goods for their companies and individuals.

For all the promise that new technologies offer individual empowerment, there are some downsides that Reynolds points out but he doesn’t discuss much. For example, information exchanged on websites and blogs can just as easily be wrong or be part of someone’s agenda. Rumors taken as facts can create all kinds of problems and prove to be extremely dangerous. Also, terrorists can just as easily get all kinds of information from the Web, like how to build bombs and where the most vulnerable places are to put them are. So it remains to be seen if too much information and freedom to access information is better or worse.

I studied a little bit for building blogging after I read this, and there are few steps to help, such as building a well-known blog and update, not reporting that news, but developing your point of view for it, focusing your topics and being an expertise in your topics and elicit feedback and discussions etc…

There are several ideas in the book that I disagree with, like most of his writing about nano-technology and developing human colonies in space, and also the section on the effects of internet pornography on teenagers. Here he claimed that teenagers are less violent and have less sexual relations because of virtual sex and violence. But he offers no statistical evidence for such claims and he also doesn’t consider that psychological effects of this on their developing minds.

At the end of the book he talks about “singularity” which he says is the point where technology exceeds human understanding. He also discusses the possibility of humans in the future having x-ray vision and the ability to breathe under water like fish. I do not think that these ideas added anything worthwhile to his book or supported the central construct of this book: that as technological advancements continue, the rise of the individual with the personal power to write and exchange ideas freely, to create and distribute his or her own work, and to challenge the supremacy of big corporations in this worldwide market will change our society and the world for good.
